it's all coming back to me now

I have started thinking alot about nursing lately since that is what I plan to do with Violet and I had such great success with Jack. I was remembering all of the disposable nursing pads I went through and lamenting on how annoying, wasteful and costly it was. I have read up on Lilypads and other re-usables and was wondering if any of you had any advice? I think the Lilypads sound great but for 20 bucks a pair they better be fantastic! (Yes, I am a super, duper cheap-o) Have any of you used them and what did you think? I am a serious leaker for like the first 6 months of nursing and my jugs get pretty huge so I need something that will cover and contain. I am not as concerned about things like the nursing pad showing through my clothes or how soft it is. I just want something that works and is tolerably comfortable. So give me the low down on what you did. Also, this may sound totally bananas but has anyone ever heard of making your own re-usables? Let me know what your advice would be, thanks!

I HATED the reusables!! I had a package of Gerber or some famous brand and I leaked right through them EVERY TIME. I tried one other type of reusable (I can't remember the brand), but came to the conclusion that the Lansinoh disposables were by far superior. It was about 7 bucks for a package of 100, but I found that I could use only two to four pads a day. Anyway, hope you find something that works for you! I had a dickens of a time ... and finally found the disposable kind and it was worth it to me to not have sweet milk marks for all the see!

i have four pair of reusables that my girlfriend gave me and i LOVE THEM. i have no idea where she got them, i'll do the research. i way over produce and leak a ton....even know in my third month of this. i hate disposable ones mostly because they get expensive & i felt like i always smelled like curdled milk. EW YUCK. i might do the lilypads next time though, i've heard great things. you might want to invest in them if you are planning on having more kidlets.

wow ok 4 years ago I used the ones you throw away...so i have no idea about the reusable but i remember they were so annoyingly expensive the other ones were! For my next child I will have to get all that info:)

If you did reusable ones wouldn't you need a bunch of pairs or you'd be doimg laundry nonstop? I too use Lansinoh and love them. They're big, thin, hold a lot and I've never had the smelly problem someone else mentioned.... but nursing isn't long term for me so maybe buying 5-7 pairs of the other kind would be cost effective for you since you do it for a looong time??

I used both, re-useable and Lansinoh. I like the Lansinoh, b/c you couldn't see the lines (they have a great curve), but the re-useable were great too! I also liked the Motherhood nursing bra's (and they're only like $15?)because they have extra padding in them as well, so if I leaked through the pad, it still didn't make it past the bra pad! (Just a thought.) Preston was a great nurser too, but my other two(oh-), I still persisted and they each nursed for a year. It was worth it though. I cherish the time we had soo close! We are excited for you guys! Hope all is well!

Hey Kat,
I bought the Lilypad one's and was really excited but they got all sticky and gross after like a few weeks.. but mind you that was my first few weeks nursing so I really had no idea what I was doing. Plus my nip nips were super sore so the plastic/like pad hurt more. I might give them one more shot next time though, because it is a hassle buying them all the time. I also want to try reusable one to wash..hmm anyways, those are my thoughts! good luck!

Hey Kat,
I used the avent disposable pads and after awhile realized they were a waste....so I bought the Avent brand washable pads and love them. I leak on occasion if I have waited too long to pump or nurse, but I do like them a lot. I bought three boxes, each box has 3 pairs in them and I don't need to change them every day, so it works out. I would recommend trying them. I bought the lily pads but have yet to use them...too many instructions, but it looks like if you follow the instructions word for word they will work. Let me know what you think. Annie

I have no clue what lily pads are so can offer no advice but being a current nurser I can tell you what I got goin on up in my place...I bought 1 large box of disposable ones and went through them during the first month of nursing and then once my hoots got a little more regulated I made the switch to reusables. I just got the standard issue ones from Target...can't remember the brand because I got them when I was pregnant with Jackson...but it works great for me. I am also one of those super big cheap skates and so I didn't want to fork out all the money to re-stock the disposable kind. It has worked really well and I have yet to leak through.

I used lily pads with my last one. I liked them cause in nursing bras they looked alot better then the disposiable ones. But if you are late on a feeding or get an extra shot of milk they get all filled up, then when you take them off it goes everywere. But I don't know it might be different for you. Good luck with your surtch.

I have been wondering this same thing, so thanks for posting about it! Have you asked Bridget? I've thought about talking to her 'cuz I'll bet she has used them.

I used Target brand reusables with Miriam and they were GREAT. And I was very leaky with Miriam.

With Magdalena, I hardly need nursing pads at all. Weird, I know, but maybe my body just knows how to do it better. Or I know how to keep my supply regulated better.

Good luck!

I have never tried re-usables, but I too think the lansinoh disposables are the best. I went through a ton the first few weeks, but now I only really wear them when I go into public. The rest of the time whenever I feel myself "let down" I hurry and apply pressure to my nipple, and it stops the flow pretty fast. A few drops usually come out still, but at least it isn't a river that soaks your shirt. (oh... did I mention I never wear a bra at home) so I don't know if that would work for you or not.
